What Questions Should I Ask?

When planning a website for your business, there are some questions that you should ask yourself prior to meeting your designer. Having done some preparation in this way will enable you and your designer to produce a far better solution, one with a far higher chance of success...

Client Consultation

This is, we feel, one of the most important aspects of any project that we undertake.

While we have the detailed knowledge of design and the Internet, you as clients know your own business and market better than we could hope to. Therefore we will consult closely with you on every aspect of the project and ensure that you are happy with the results at each key stage of the project.

We will offer advice on the best type of solution for your needs. For example, if you are a small 5 bedroom guesthouse, there is very little point in paying £1000+ for a high level Content Management System that would enable you to build up a site with hundreds of pages. If you are a large organisation something like that may be the ideal solution.

The first step when considering a website is to identify clearly what you hope to achieve from the site. This should not simply be 'to increase sales' but identify from what market sector those clients will come, what targets you have for those increased sales, whether a website would enable you to move into new market areas or offer new services and products.

Having identified your goals you should now spend some time on the internet searching out other sites that are offering similar products and services, this will help you identify any niche markets that you (and others) have previously missed, as well as identify what the level and quality of any competition are.

During our initial meeting with you we will offer advice and information about ways to go about the research that you need to do and will always be available to answer any questions that you may have.

Design Elements

Visual Design is a very subjective area. As part of our ongoing consultation process we will discuss with you the visual style of your site and any specific elements that you would like included, or, indeed, any that you specifically do not want.

An Ongoing Process

The most important thing about the consultation process within any of our projects is that it is a continuous two way process. This means that we always try to keep clients informed of progress during any build, and that clients are always welcome to contact us with suggestion for content or elements that they feel may benefit the site. By undertaking this level of consultation we are sure that Atkinsons Internet Services and you can make a succcessful team.

Here are some examples to get you started:-

What do I actually want to achieve from the site?
Lay down some specific goals rather than simply saying 'I want it to make me money'.

What is my Budget?
This is important. This will help your designer know what facilties they can put into your solution for the budget... you don't get an e-commerce solution for £150...

Who are my competition?
It's vital to know who you are up against. If they are doing something right, find out how they do it and improve on it...

Do they have successful websites?
If they do, show them to your designer. Decide what you like and dislike about those sites.

As well as answering these questions it's a really good idea to spend some time surfing the internet and looking at lots of different sites. Make notes about what you do and don't like about the web site design of those that you visit.
